BREATHE

i know that i will breathe easier
once the war is over
and the dust has settled;
i know that i will breathe easier
when all wounds have been healed
and all debts have been paid, when
the cry of the mourning dove subsides.

i know that my heart will be at peace
once the storm has passed
and the sun comes forth,
when the dawn sings its song anew.

i know that i will breathe easier
when grief’s acrid tears have dried up
and the ocean of sorrow grows still.
i know that i will breathe easier
when every fear has been challenged
and delusion has been given last rites.

i know that my heart will be at peace
once the cobwebs have been swept away
and my mind is clear and unfettered.

Return to previous poem

i know that i will breathe easier
when the insidious glow of electron tubes is
eclipsed by the flickering dance of altar candles,
when the glitter of this mad world grows dim,
in the sandalwood peace of silent moments,
drawing near to the refuge of the further shore.
